Protection & care

We want to highlight that jewellery serves a functional purpose as well. As a result, small imperfections may arise over time, reflecting the piece’s history, as natural wear and tear occurs from contact with other objects.

Wear patterns vary for each owner, depending on how the jewellery is worn and cared for. Most pieces are suitable for daily use, but some, like the Series XF ring collection, are better for occasional wear. Their outward-facing tips are more vulnerable to wear from accidental bumps, so extra care is advised, as these details cannot be replicated.

Removing your jewellery before engaging in prolonged physical activities can help prevent damage and wear. We recommend taking off rings during exercise, gardening, or any activity where they may come into contact with other objects.

In addition, wearing rings next to each other on adjacent fingers can naturally lead to wear.

To protect the surface for as long as possible, avoid storing pieces loosely in a box or with other items, as they may collide and cause the plating or tarnish protection to wear off. We recommend always storing them in their jewellery bag or box when not in use, especially while travelling. Additionally, keep your pieces in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Avoid direct contact with perfume, deodorant, soap, or lotion, as these products contain chemicals that can tarnish or damage the surface of your jewellery.

We also recommend removing jewellery when swimming in the sea, or even when washing your hands, if possible. If the pieces do get wet, gently dry them off with a silver cleaning cloth.

Gold-plated and silver-plated jewellery has unique chemical properties that can cause it to change over time. But don’t worry — we’ll explain why this happens and how you can have your jewellery cleaned with us.

In short, both gold-plating and silver-plating are thin surface layers that over time expose the underlying metal through small pores or diffusion, allowing it to react with the environment. These natural changes occur automatically due to chemical processes from the surroundings and are part of the normal ageing process.

Our gold-plated jewellery is made from high-quality RJC-935 sterling silver, coated with a layer of 18K gold.

Over time, gold-plated jewellery may change slightly. Friction, sweat, or exposure to chemicals can gradually wear down the gold layer, revealing the silver beneath. This silver then reacts with oxygen and sulphur compounds in the air, leading to a darker tarnish.

Although gold is highly durable, contact with sulphur compounds — found in cosmetics, perfume, or air pollution — can occasionally cause slight surface discolouration.

Silver behaves differently from gold, as it chemically reacts with sulphur compounds in the air — for example, hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), which can come from car exhaust fumes, industrial waste, or certain foods (such as eggs or onions). This reaction forms silver sulphide (Ag₂S), which appears as a dark to black layer. This change is completely natural and is known as sulphurization — the main reason why silver-plated jewellery tarnishes over time.

In addition to sulphur compounds, silver can also react with oxygen, especially when exposed to moisture and air, which can also lead to oxidation.

The natural pH level of our skin also affects the tarnishing of gold-plated and silver-plated jewellery. Our skin has a slightly acidic pH level, typically between 4.7 and 5.75, which is created by the acid mantle. This mantle consists of sweat, sebum, and other substances, forming an acidic environment on the skin’s surface. Because it is slightly acidic, it can react with the metals in the jewellery, gradually impacting the plating.

The extent to which a piece of jewellery tarnishes, however, varies from person to person and depends on factors such as skin type, sweat composition, and personal care habits.

There are many home remedies online that claim to help clean tarnished silver jewellery — however, we advise against using them as they can actually damage your pieces. Instead, we offer a simple and safe cleaning service where you send us your jewellery, and we professionally restore it for you.

Simply send us a message, and we’ll send you the address of our workshop so we can quickly clean your jewellery!

However, please bear in mind that more extensive repairs, such as repairing dents or reshaping edges, aren’t possible. These little imperfections over the time are simply part of the history of your jewellery, as natural wear and tear occurs automatically through contact with other objects.

Just snap a picture of your piece, and share all information via email with us. Once we receive your request, we’ll get back to you quickly with a time frame.
